If you, or someone you know still has not enrolled in health insurance coverage, you may still have the chance. The Department of Health and Human Services has just announced a new Special Enrollment Period for health insurance. The Tax Penalty Special Enrollment Period allows individuals who paid the Shared Responsibility Tax (penalty) to enroll from March 15th until April 30th.
To be eligible for the SEP, you must:
1. Not have enrolled in coverage through the Federally Facilitated Marketplace (Exchange) for 2015
2. Were subject to the Shared Responsibility Payment (Penalty) for 2014
3. Have become aware of the implications of the penalty after the close of open enrollment on February 15/2015.
This enrollment period is NOT available if you enrolled in any coverage for 2015 during the most recent Open Enrollment Period. If you enroll in coverage using this enrollment period, you will still be responsible for the Shared Responsibility Payment for any months in 2015 that you did not have health insurance coverage.
