Health Insurance Open Enrollment ends in less than a week. For 2014-2015, open enrollment ends February 15, 2015. Here are some things you will need to know:
New Plans. Many carriers are expanding their health plan offerings for the upcoming open enrollment season. Two major Michigan carriers have significantly increase plan offerings for 2015. More plans can mean better choices, but you may want to review your choices with a licensed agent to make certain you understand your options before you enroll. If you don’t make a change by February 15, you are usually locked in to your plan until January 1, 2016.
Redetermination Letters. If you applied for the Advanced Premium Tax Credit last year and agreed to allow the Marketplace to use your tax information from the IRS is future years, you will get a letter that will inform you of the amount of your tax credit. It is important to keep in mind that this subsidy amount will be based on the income tax return you filed in April of 2014 (for your 2013 income). If your income or household information has changed (for example an increase in income or a child that leaves home and is filing taxes on their own), you will need to update your information on the marketplace. If you do not update this information, you may get tax credits that will later have to be repaid.
Effective Dates. Applications completed and approved by the 15th of the month will have an effective date the first of the following month. Applications completed and approved from the 16th to the last day of the month will have an effective date the first of the second month following. This would mean that an application completed this week will have an effective date of March 1, 2015.
